Easter Vigil begins with the Service of Light. As the Paschal Candle is lit, the minister says: “May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.” And that is the heart of this holy night: God’s light shatters the darkness of sin and death.
At the beginning of the Vigil, only the light of the Paschal Candle appears. And then the Church sings in the Exultet: “Rejoice, O earth, in shining splendor, radiant in the brightness of your King! Christ has conquered! Glory fills you! Darkness vanishes forever!” The message is clear: Christ has broken the chains of death. His resurrection overturns the power of the grave.
THE STORY OF LIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING
This victory of light has always been part of God’s plan. In the first reading for tonight, creation begins with God’s command: “Let there be light.” God sees the light and separates it from the darkness. God leads His people through the night by a pillar of fire and sends them out of slavery, in the Exodus story. And here again and again, Scripture proves that God is the One who brings light out of darkness, freedom out of bondage, and life out of death.
THE STRUGGLE BETWEEN LIGHT AND DARKNESS
In Holy Week, we see a fight between light and darkness. Darkness seems to strengthen. Betrayal attacks trust. Hatred shatters love. Falsehood shapes judgment. Injustice threatens what is right. Fear silences courage. Denial tears apart friendship. On Good Friday, the evil forces appear to emerge from darkness to triumph. Jesus, the innocent one, is condemned in place of the guilty. Pilate asks, “What is truth?” And the Gospel says darkness covered the land. But that was Good Friday. The darkness was never the end of the story.
THE VICTORY OF THE RISEN CHRIST
Tonight we celebrate the victory of Christ, the true Light of the world. As Saint John says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” The tomb is no longer a place of defeat. Jesus is no longer dead. He is risen.
Listen again to the Gospel of this holy night: when dawn breaks, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary come to the tomb. There is a great earthquake. The angel descends and rolls back the stone, and sits upon it. His appearance is like lightning, his clothing white as snow. The guards tremble and become like dead men. And then comes the message that changes everything: “Do not be afraid… He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said.”
This is the turning point of the world. The one who was crucified now lives. The One who was laid in the tomb has conquered death. The One rejected by men is revealed in glory. What began at creation with “Let there be light” is now full of light in the resurrection of Christ.
THE LIGHT THAT ENTERS OUR LIVES
This Easter Vigil reminds us that Christ’s victory is not only something to admire; it is something to receive. His glory must enter our wounded places. His light should shine in our hearts, our families, our relationships, and our communities. The resurrection speaks eloquently to the story of our freedom in Christ. Darkness does not have the final word. Sin and evil do not define human existence. Shame has no last word. Fear does not have the final word. Christ does.
WITNESSES OF THE RESURRECTION
The women at the tomb teach us something important tonight. They came in sorrow, but they became witnesses of hope. Although they sought a corpse, they found the living Lord instead. They went away afraid yet full of joy, and they ran to tell the good news. That is our calling too. We are not meant to remain in darkness. We belong to the light. We are a resurrection people. Because Christ has risen, lies no longer define us, pain no longer imprisons us, and death no longer defeats us. Hope rises again in Christ. In Christ, grace speaks louder than guilt. Life is stronger than death in Christ.
So tonight, ask that the light of Christ shine on every dark corner of your life, every dark place of your life in a better way. His resurrection will give new faith in Him. His victory will renew every believer’s heart. The message is strong: Glory fills you. Darkness vanishes forever. Christ is risen. Alleluia! Alleluia! Amen.
